Personally I’ve never seen the need to post an avatar on ANY forum as the space allowed is microscopic.
If I where to post an avatar it would be similar to Hillbilly77's, only an inch or so wider, based on distance from the ends of the ears in Hillbilly77's full size picture. My largest outside to outside is 18.75".
As an alternative, paid memberships at the following levels allow for “Enhanced” avatars:
PLATINUM member can have an avatar 100 x 100
GOLD member can have avatar 90 x 90
SILVER members can have an avatar 80 x 80
BRONZE members can have an avatar 70 x 70
Sorry, don't know the size of free membership. But would assume 60 x 60 or smaller.
BTW, I don't contribute at the platinum level so I can have a larger avatar.
I contribute because this is the best place on the internet.

No need. I'm sure we all watched the original Saturday Night Live and are all too familiar with that character. That is non other than the irrepressible Raymond J, Johnson Jr.
You can call him Ray
You can call him J
You can call him Johnny
You can call him Sonny
You can call him RJ
You can call him Jr.
But ya doesn't has ta call him Mr. Johnson!
Good Lord: I thought it was Groucho Marx. Really. Never leaned over and looked closely.
I was never a fan of Sat. Night Live. His (labworm's) Johnson sig. made no sense.

I like the avatars, they provide a visual cue to who's posting without having to read the name. It's easy to scan through a thread and spot Caj's or Sip's avatar, when their handle might not stand out. And who doesn't immediately recognize The Big Gorilla himself? The avatars that don't work well are the ones that have a lot of fine detail.
Mine is just a self portrait. "I'm ready for my closeup, Mr. deMille."

Mine is pretty much a no brainer, considering my chosen user name. The second one is the one I use, the first is what I would use if it wasn't 4.8 times the size allowed for an avatar.

I guess I am going to have to come up with something. When I started this thread J simply thought that there must be some way to tap on the aviator and make it big. Its a case of "I thought I was wrong but I was right." Frankly it looks rather pointless as I can only reconise about 1/4 of the aviators without working at it.

The Southern Cross of Honor
I have used it on other boards. Even had one guy to tell me it was "controversial". I told him I come by it honest...
