Barbara Norris-Eckerle, formerly Monrovia, Md., Died at home in Manchester on Friday, July 16, 2021.

She has four children, Leslie B. Fowler, Manchester; Lorena Bredenberg (Greg) from Tullahoma; Deirdre K. Perney (Billy) of Mt. Luftig, Md .; and Michael E. Norris (Lisa) of Chapel Hill.

In addition to her children, she also has a sister, Julie (Jean) Marlow of Brigantine, NJ, and several grandchildren, including Amber B. Della Giustina (Bill) of W. Springfield, MA; Brook R. Wood, (Gretchen) of Charlottesville, Virginia; Paul N. Fowler of Nashville; Lee D. Fowler (Tanya) of Louisville, Kentucky; Amanda K. Brewer (Casey) of Antioch; Christopher E. Norris (Kristen), NC; Barbara Norris, PA; Eric Norris (Erika) Frederick, Md .; Angelia Taylor (MD); Madison Norris, Michael Norris, Jr., Mercedes Norris, and Madden Norris, all from Chapel Hill; as well as several great-grandchildren.

Barbara was born on January 19, 1927 in Boston, Massachusetts, to the late Vincent F. Russo and Kathryn Cole Russo. She graduated from the Girls’ Latin School in Boston and was one of the first women to receive a scholarship to MIT. In her early years she was an avid sailor and also learned to pilot small airplanes. She met her late husband, Eric Norris, at MIT in 1945. She traveled a lot with him and spent several years in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil. She was fluent in Portuguese.

Barbara was also an avid skier and traveled the United States, Canada, and Switzerland pursuing her skiing. She also took up photography, painting, and sewing, and she mastered all of these.

As a young adult, upon returning to the United States from Brazil, Barbara worked on Capitol Hill, worked for three congressmen, and was actively involved in planning the metro system in Washington, DC, and engaged in breeding and exhibition from purebred Persian and Himalayan cats. She was a member of several cat clubs, including the Hidden Peak Cat Fanciers Cub and the Mad Catter’s Club. Her cats won several major championships.

Later in life, after the death of her husband Eric, she met and married the late Kenneth L. Eckerle in May 1992, whom she met while taking ballroom dancing classes.

Barbara is buried next to her late husbands Eric Norris and Kenneth Eckerle in Glade Cemetery in Walkersville, Maryland. A memorial service will take place at a time to be determined.
