Dog and cat owners warned that warmer weather can create a perfect breeding ground for fleas

Pet owners have been warned to remain vigilant as weather conditions will create a perfect breeding ground for fleas in the coming days.

It is common knowledge that the pests thrive in warm weather and humid conditions are perfect for the insects too.

Karen Heskin, Director of Pets at Pets at Home Group p, said, “Fleas can be a nuisance to both pets and owners. They can cause irritation, and the life cycle of fleas can lead to our cats and dogs developing tapeworms. We recommend checking for fleas regularly, especially if your pet goes outside.

“But the good news is that fleas can be easily controlled, although it is best to act quickly to limit the effects on your pet and your home.”

As warm temperatures and rain showers are forecast for large parts of the UK, experts from the Pets at Home Group have given tips on how to protect pets:

Know how to check it out

It’s a good idea to get in the habit of regularly checking your pet for fleas to make sure there are no fleas lurking. You should search your pet’s fur thoroughly, paying particularly close attention to the armpits, groin, neck, and base of the tail, as these are popular hiding spots for fleas.

Watch out for changes in behavior

Fleas can cause a lot of discomfort and trouble to your pet. So, if you notice certain changes in behavior, these pesky parasites may be to blame. Scratching or biting, over-grooming, red patches of skin, and hair loss can all be symptoms of fleas. If your pet shows any of these signs, contact a veterinarian.

It’s not just cats and dogs

Fleas don’t just affect cats and dogs. In fact, they can become a problem for most furry pets like rabbits. Remember never to use dog flea treatment on a cat. Some ingredients in dog products can be toxic to cats. Please ask a veterinarian or animal keeper for advice.

Treat your home the same way you treat your pet

Flea larvae hatch from eggs that can live anywhere in the house – from pet bedding to carpets and soft furnishings.

Hot washing your pet’s bedding and cleaning pillows, couches, and carpets that your dog or cat would like to relax on can kill any flea eggs and larvae that might be there. You should also replace your dust bag or filter as fleas can survive in it.

Set regular reminders to stay up to date on treatments

Preventing a flea infestation is much easier than curing it, and the best way to keep your pet safe from fleas is with regular treatment. While fleas thrive in warm, wet weather, they live year round.

The treatments are usually completely problem-free because they are available as a “spot-on” product that is quick and easy to administer. Regular checkups with a veterinarian will help keep your pet happy and healthy.
