Medaglia d’Oro Colt shines on day one of the Arqana Summer Sale


A son of Medaglia d’Oro (Lot 33) surpassed the first session of Arqana Summer Sale on Thursday in Deauville with €220,000.

Offered by MC Thoroughbred, Marco Bozzi Bloodstock snapped the 3 May filly, with Bozzi bidding alongside Alessandro Botti on behalf of Prince Saud bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

“He is a beautiful colt by Medaglia d’Oro, a stallion who has had a lot of success in Saudi Arabia,” the agent said. “We have been following the colt for a while and we visited him in Ireland a month ago and really liked him. We are very happy with the purchase.”

Out of the listed Marble Hill S. Third So Stylish (Johannesburg), himself a half sister to G1 Phoenix S. and G1 National S. Heldin One Cool Cat (Storm Cat), he comes from the same family as the Group/Grade 1 placed duo from Savannah Dancer (Northern Dancer) and her daughter Sha Tha (Mr. Prospector). He previously brought home $62,000 in the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale Stateside.

The second favorite lot of the day during the refresher batch was a colt by Exceed And Excel (Aus) (Lot 72) out of the Intikhab mare Duquesa (Irish). Bozzi was back in action and this time collected 110,000 euros. From the Knockanglass Stables show, the bay is a half brother to the listed Born To Be (Born To Sea {Irish}) while his granddam Love Of Silver (Arctic Tern) won the G3 Prestige S. in the UK and was third in the G1 Prix Marcel Bousac.

Topping the list of flatbred filly buyers was another American offspring Lot 69which comes from the former Shuttle stallion More than ready. A half sister to GIII Whitmore S. runner-up Tulane Tryst (Into Mischief) and out of Mocklershill, she caught the attention of BBA Ireland and Yulong Investments at €77,000. Her dam is a half-sister to stakes winner and Grade III finisher Abraham (Distorted Humor), while under the third dam is three-time Grade II winner and GI Go for Wand H. bridesmaid Miss Isabella (Silver Charm).

At the end of the refresher period, 73 flat bred 2-year-olds (88%) were sold for €1,393,500 gross. The average was €21,773.

Camp horses were also popular on the day, with seven lots making six figure earnings alongside the two flatbred youngsters. Of these seven, four were joined by Doctor Dino (Fr). Lot 114 the only other lot besides that Medaglia d’Oro Hengst to break the 200,000 euro barrier. The gelding shop sold to Bridge Consignment Ltd for €210,000. was awarded comes from the commission of Jean-Marie Callier. His dam Miss de Champdoux (Fr) (Voix du Nord {Fr}) won level 2 jumps during her racing career.

“He’s a wonderful horse,” said Marius Cyprès of the colt, who will wear the colors of a new French partnership that includes Thierry Cypres’ family. “He is doing very well and comes from a great family. I know him well – I watched him grow up so I’m very happy. We bought him for a new French partnership with my father and he will stay in training in France.”

Another gelding son by Doctor Dino brought the third highest price of the day with 160,000 euros. Sold as Lot 104 by The Channel Consignment, the son of Magnificat (Fr) (Saint des Saints {Fr}), herself a full sister of the licensed show jumpers Happy Monarch (Fr) (Saint des Saints {Fr}) and Lord du Mesnil (Fr ) (Saint des Saints {Fr}) went to NBB Racing.

Thursday’s session covered two-year-old flatbloods and camp horses, with the gross price being €5,598,500 for 169 lots out of 205 offered (82.4%). The median improved to €21,000 (+55.6%) and the average also jumped to €33,127 (+60%).

The second and final session of the Arqana Summer Sale starts at 11am with breeding animals and horses in training.
