Welcome to Datadrop! We hope that this issue of the newsletter is not a waste of time. We hope it doesn’t give you any paws. Don’t worry, we’ll get to the point – it’s the pet breeds data drop you’ve been waiting for!
🐾 Most Popular Breeds of Pets in America 🐾
We can’t all be winners, can we? But when it comes to pets, it’s hard to label any of them as “unpopular” because they’re probably just as cute as the most popular ones. Cuteness is in the eye of the beholder.
Recently, Filter King has compiled thousands of Google search trends classify the most popular dog and cat breeds in the U.S., and frankly, some of the results have been a little surprising.
First of all, this method of compiling data to find a trend is not final. Who knows why someone would use google to search for a breed. Maybe they just wanted to see a photo, or just like a certain breed of cats? The data itself cannot say with 100% certainty that someone looking for any of these breeds actually got that breed as a pet. So keep that in mind as we go through this.
🐕 Dog Breeds 🐕
The results for the most popular dogs in each state vary widely, with four different breeds at the top in at least one state. The most common winner is the French bulldog, victory in twenty states from California to Massachusetts.
In Michigan, the most popular breed of dog was the Cane Corso, an Italian breed of dog. The Cane Corso ranked first in nineteen states, including Georgia and Colorado, while the Australian shepherd was the most popular breed in ten states including Vermont, Utah, and Alaska.
The Golden Retriever and the German Shepherd came in fourth and fifth, respectively, followed by the Rottweiler, Pomeranian, Yorkshire Terrier, Shiba Inu and Shih Tzu.
For what it’s worth, Rover released a similar list earlier this year, and the Labrador Retriever, Golden, and German were the top three. Rover uses its own dog database. Here is the full top 10 list.
🐈 Cat Breeds 🐈
Ok, finally we are with the cat portion – the better portion. (Sorry, I’m admittedly a cat person).
The ranking for this one is a little less dramatic: the American forest cat came out on top in every single state! The Bengal, savannah, Siamese and Munchkin Cat breeds rounded out the top 5.
“The Maine Coon is known for their kind and intelligent personalities, while their gentle and social nature makes them a great choice for people with families and other pets.”
Rover had a similar list for the most popular cat breeds so I think the cat list is closer to other data we’ve seen.
