A man in Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram breeds native dog breeds that are threatened with extinction. Kuttymani makes a living protecting and breeding native dog breeds such as Kanni and Chippiparai. In general, the dog breeds native to Tamil Nadu can run very fast and were used for hunting long ago. Currently, after the massive Jallikattu protest in 2017, youth are showing more interest in buying the native breeds, including Rajapalayam, Chippiparai, Kanni and Kombai.
Kuttymani says: “Our pedigree dogs are easier to breed than foreign ones. Native breed dogs are very resilient, and therefore maintenance costs are lower. On average, our breeds have a lifespan of 13 to 15 years. In addition, their longevity depends on the quality of food intake,” Mani said. He added that he has 29 native breed dogs, 19 of which are puppies. He raised these dogs by selling the puppies and making an income from them. He also said that because he was the only breadwinner in the family. These pedigree dogs were the biggest help during the Covid-19 lockdown when he lost his job.
Amazing Facts About Native Dog Breeds
Named after places, southern Tamil Nadu boasts of native breeds such as the Rajapalayam, Chippiparai, Kanni and Kombai. Like the Jallikattu bulls, the Tamil way of life follows the tradition of the local dogs. The native breed, Chippiparai, is among Indian Army dogs trained to detect Covid-19 using sweat and urine samples. The proudest dog breeds from Tamil Nadu – Chippiparai and Kanni – were mentioned in Prime Minister Modi’s “Mann Ki Baat”.
The number of local dog breeds such as the Rajapalayam, Chippiparai, Alanku, Kombai, Malayeri and Kanni has been in decline since the 1990s. With the ban on hunting, breeding of these species slowly declined. During this time, foreign dog breeds were gaining influence everywhere.
The desire and passion for “dog breeds” such as Pomeranian, German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Great Dane, Buck have not decreased. The harsh truth is that Indian breed dogs are one of the most overlooked breeds in the world as most people prefer to keep foreign dog breeds as pets. But recently, some celebrities have been raising Indian breed dogs and raising awareness among people, including actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu.
Although there are more than a thousand dog breeds worldwide, only about 350 of them are recognized. Of these 350, seven are Indian races. Also, from these seven breeds, Kanni, Kombai, Chippiparai and Rajapalayam originate from Tamil Nadu.

His bony-skinny looking physique helps him run fast and catch animals no matter how much food he eats.
