These native Tamil Nadu dog breeds will give foreign puppies a run for their money

A man in Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram breeds native dog breeds that are threatened with extinction. Kuttymani makes a living protecting and breeding native dog breeds such as Kanni and Chippiparai. In general, the dog breeds native to Tamil Nadu can run very fast and were used for hunting long ago. Currently, after the massive Jallikattu protest in 2017, youth are showing more interest in buying the native breeds, including Rajapalayam, Chippiparai, Kanni and Kombai.

Kuttymani says: “Our pedigree dogs are easier to breed than foreign ones. Native breed dogs are very resilient, and therefore maintenance costs are lower. On average, our breeds have a lifespan of 13 to 15 years. In addition, their longevity depends on the quality of food intake,” Mani said. He added that he has 29 native breed dogs, 19 of which are puppies. He raised these dogs by selling the puppies and making an income from them. He also said that because he was the only breadwinner in the family. These pedigree dogs were the biggest help during the Covid-19 lockdown when he lost his job.

Amazing Facts About Native Dog Breeds

Named after places, southern Tamil Nadu boasts of native breeds such as the Rajapalayam, Chippiparai, Kanni and Kombai. Like the Jallikattu bulls, the Tamil way of life follows the tradition of the local dogs. The native breed, Chippiparai, is among Indian Army dogs trained to detect Covid-19 using sweat and urine samples. The proudest dog breeds from Tamil Nadu – Chippiparai and Kanni – were mentioned in Prime Minister Modi’s “Mann Ki Baat”.

The number of local dog breeds such as the Rajapalayam, Chippiparai, Alanku, Kombai, Malayeri and Kanni has been in decline since the 1990s. With the ban on hunting, breeding of these species slowly declined. During this time, foreign dog breeds were gaining influence everywhere.

The desire and passion for “dog breeds” such as Pomeranian, German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Great Dane, Buck have not decreased. The harsh truth is that Indian breed dogs are one of the most overlooked breeds in the world as most people prefer to keep foreign dog breeds as pets. But recently, some celebrities have been raising Indian breed dogs and raising awareness among people, including actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu.

Although there are more than a thousand dog breeds worldwide, only about 350 of them are recognized. Of these 350, seven are Indian races. Also, from these seven breeds, Kanni, Kombai, Chippiparai and Rajapalayam originate from Tamil Nadu.
It is said that the Chippiparai breed got its name from Chippiparai, a place near Madurai District bred by the kings who ruled long ago. Chippiparai have historically been used for hunting deer, hogs and other animals. Its uniqueness lies in its sniffing ability to target rabbits, pigs, and other creatures lurking in the wild. They are off-white, grey, dull brown in appearance and the legs are generally brown in colour. Its chest is expanded while the abdomen is lowered and the legs are slightly longer. His bony-skinny looking physique helps him run fast and catch animals no matter how much food he eats.

Especially in the Thoothukudi region, people consider the Chippiparai dogs as one of the members of the family. These dogs are bred not only for domestication, but also for guarding large farms and gardens. Chippiparai dogs can run faster than rabbits, meaning they can run at speeds of 60 kilometers per hour. These dogs are affectionate with people and especially with their master. The body hair of these dogs is short and shiny. So these help withstand heat. They will sell for between £18,000 and £25,000. Chippiparai puppies now cost between £8,000 and £12,000. Chippiparai was also involved in the search for a tiger last year.

Known to be very aggressive yet very loyal, the Kombai breed is ideal for guarding. One kombai is enough to protect a farmhouse. This breed is commonly found in the Western Ghats of southern India. The body is earth red, eyes, nose and forehead are black. A month-old Kombai puppy costs between £5,000 and £6,000.

Kanni is a breed of dog known for its agility, speed, and hunting abilities. Kanni dogs, commonly referred to as hunting dogs, rely on their senses when hunting. These dogs are found in most parts of Tamil Nadu. Apparently a one-month-old Kanni puppy most often cost between £8,000 and £10,000.

Rajapalayam is common in southern Tamil Nadu. The name derives from the place of origin – Rajapalayam, a place in Virudhunagar district near Madurai. Rajapalayam dogs are also known as “royal dogs” due to their strong association with the aristocracy during the reigns of kings and queens. This dog will not change owners under any circumstances. This race will be majestic and heroic to behold. The body is milky white and pink. The earlobes are curved and the legs are straight and solid.
